WHAT DO WE DO?

We are a company who makes garbage disposal easy and effortless by designing smart trash cans.

HOW DO WE DO IT?

By making a smart, rentable trash can with a companion app that helps educate foreigners through a growing knowledge base.

SOCIAL IMPACT

We want to educate foreigners in Japan who don’t know how to separate garbage according to council laws and cannot follow the right schedule for disposal. As well to work towards SDGs 11 and 12.

HOW CAN WE AVOID THE #TRASHPOCALYPSE

THE COMPANION APP

SEARCH BAR

A knowledge base with accurate information regarding how to correctly dispose daily items

CALENDAR

It contains a monthly planner of the garbage schedule according to your neighborhood so you can prepare in advance and stay on top of it.

DASHBOARD

Connect all of your smartrash and check the level of your garbage even when you are outside

ALARMS

The app will automatically set alarms for you to remember to take out the garbage on the correct day according to your neighborhood schedule.

THE SMARTRASH

SENSOR

A distance sensor placed in the lid of the smartrash reads the levels of garbage and sends the information to the app

ODOR CONTROL

A deodorant located in the top of the lid protects and maintains your smartrash and house from bad smells.

DESIGN

Every smartrash is covered in different icons depending on the type of garbage you can throw. It is an easier way for the user to visually recognize and separate their garbage.

According to Waste Atlas, each person in Japan produces an average of 356.2kg of waste per year and, as a whole, Japan generates 45,360,000 tons of municipal waste per year however Japan doesn’t have enough space for landfills for these amounts of waste and as a result, they created a waste separation system which aims to reduce the amount of waste that is produced.

tons of municipal waste per year

kg of waste per year each person

This waste separation system has main categories like burnable, non-burnable, plastic, and paper. But each region and city within Japan has an specific set of rules when it comes to define which waste goes where. It is a complicated system but not only in terms of how to separate garbage, but also the collection days and pick-up times are different depending on the neighborhood.  For reference Tokyo has 23 wards, this means there are at least 23 different pick-up schedules and rulesets for waste in Japan’s biggest city.

In an ideal world, everyone will be a responsible citizen that separates their waste according to the categories from their region and take out the garbage following their neighborhood schedule, but the truth is that not even locals or long-time residents follow the rules due to a lack of understanding and as a result, the government ends up with extra tons of waste than recyclable materials in the landfills that cannot be recycled or reused. These affect the environment and our lives, and generates an effect that we like to call #Trashpocalypse.
